The two sit close together: she raises a yellow rose in one hand and turns her eyes to him, while he holds a pipe in his teeth and leans her way. He wears a blue beret, checked shirt, waistcoat and a red neckerchief; she has a grey fringed shawl over a dusty pink dress. A silvered brazier of embers stands on the grass between them, with a straw-covered flask to the left. The base is left green with a moulded edge. The yellow rose becomes the lightest note between the grey shawl and the blue beret.
