Riders & Carriages

The series rests on the horse, worked out differently each time. There are state outings: an open carriage with floral painting and a monogram drawn by horses; a green carriage with gilded wheels where a coachman drives a pair and a family with a child rides inside; a cabriolet carrying a couple, a fan in the lady's hand.

There is sport. A jockey in a helmet caught in the drive of a race — two pieces differing only in the horse's coat, grey and chestnut. A rider clearing a hedge on a bay, taken at the moment of the jump. Horses at a barrier of branches, horses by a wooden fence.

There are military riders on rearing mounts: a Cossack in a papakha with cartridge pockets, sabre and bow, a cannon at the base; a lancer in a plumed helmet with epaulettes and aiguillettes.

And there are country scenes: a boy in a hat driving a cart behind a donkey, a sack and apples in the back; a family riding a two-wheeled cart behind a white horse, with a basket and pumpkins.
