Cossack on Horseback

The white horse rears against a tightened rein, its mane and tail modelled in heavy strands. The Cossack leans back in the saddle in a green coat with rows of cartridge loops across the chest and a red-topped fur papakha; a scabbard and a whip run along his side. Red trousers over tall boots are the one strong note in an otherwise held-back palette. Among the rocks of the base lie a fallen man and a dropped horn.
