Children

The children in this series are almost always in motion. Four crowd onto a wooden sledge and ride down a snowy slope, hands in the air. Three tumble laughing into a wheelbarrow while a fourth pushes it. A boy and a girl swing on a log, books and a satchel tossed nearby.

Rain and umbrellas make the second running theme. A girl tilts a yellow umbrella to shelter a shaggy dog from an imagined downpour; a boy under a burgundy umbrella strokes the wet dog beside him; two walk to school pressed together under one umbrella, satchels in hand.

Animals are seldom far away: white rabbits fed from a basket of cabbage and carrots, a kitten in a lap, doves underfoot.

There are quiet scenes as well: a youth and a girl on rope swings under an arch of branches and berries, children at a dolphin-shaped fountain, a woman showing a doll to a child in a cradle. What the figurine carries is not the pose but the age — proportion, gesture, the look on a face.
