Games in the Snow

The sledge is already running downhill and each child holds on differently: the girl at the back throws both arms up, a boy in a striped cap braces a foot on the runner, another girl clutches at her hood, and the rider in front pulls the rope taut. Winter is carried by small things — knitted ear flaps, fur trim, yellow boots, the crust of snow along the slope. An arcaded frieze finishes the oval base.
