The driver sits sideways on the edge of the cart, leaning forward with the reins drawn in, dressed in a straw hat, red jacket and blue trousers. The grey donkey has halted in a checked blanket and leather harness, its muzzle down to the ground and the trace chain slack. A woven basket and a length of pale cloth ride in the bed, and red apples have rolled to the rim of the base. Spokes and iron tyres are modelled one by one.
