Three horses run almost level along a white post-and-rail fence: a bay in front, a dark bay in the middle, a chestnut closing at the back. The jockeys are crouched low in green, pink and purple silks, whips up and the horses' forelegs thrown out on the same beat. A narrow strip of turf carries the whole line of the race. The piece is built to be read from the side, as one measured stretch of the course.
