In a blue-grey shirt and red breeches, the sculptor sits back on the quarried block with his head tipped up toward the work. His right hand rests on the knee with a chisel; the left braces against the stone. Behind him the unfinished Pietà Rondanini rises in plain white, two figures barely released from the mass. Mallet, punches and a drawing of the same group are spread across the ledges, and the painted figure plays against the unglazed white throughout.
