Motherhood

Seated and turned at the waist, the mother raises her child with both hands until their faces almost meet. The infant, in a white shift, plants one foot against her forearm and reaches for her cheek. Her golden yellow gown is painted with black-and-white blossoms along the sleeve and skirt, with fine gathered ruffles at the collar and cuffs. The skirt falls in heavy folds into two tiers of cream frills that cover the base almost entirely.
