Motherhood (19th-Century Style)

The whole figure turns on one answering gesture: mother and child lift their palms toward one another, almost touching. She sits half-turned with her head inclined, her pale green gown printed with small flowering sprigs and tied with a rose-coloured bow at the throat. The baby, wrapped in yellow cloth, sits on her knee and looks upward. The skirt falls in broad folds to a base edged with a white ruffle and a gilt line, with a dry root rising at one side.
