Young Mother

The mother has knelt at the side of a wicker cradle, one hand resting on its hood. Her dark blue gown is scattered with small roses and opened at the bodice over a flounced white petticoat, an orange kerchief tied over her hair. The baby lies on a pillow deep in the basket, covered to the chest by a white cloth with an embroidered border, both hands above it. The basketwork is modelled rod by rod, from the raised hood down to the foot.
