Holy Water Font (St Peter's Basilica)

A pair of white winged putti sit to either side and hold up a large basin shaped as an amber shell with scrolled edges. Between them a dark blue drape falls heavily down the steps, gathered into deep folds. Below, the plinth is painted as red marble with gilded mouldings and an oval cartouche carrying a handwritten inscription. The font works on the contrast between the matt white figures and the saturated blue of the cloth.
