Dressed in crimson with a green cap, the painter sits on a low block and turns towards the viewer, his right hand raised in explanation and a scroll across his knee. Behind him rises a panel bearing the Last Supper, the figures along the long table fully coloured while part of the wall is left unfinished in bands of ochre. His working things spread over the flagged base: a trestle table with brushes in jugs, bowls of ground pigment, books, scrolls and palette knives.
