The Descent from the Cross

The cross stands on the crown of a rocky mound, the INRI plaque nailed above and a ladder set against the shaft; a man astride the crossbeam takes the body by the shoulders. Below, several figures reach up to receive it — one in a dark cloak drawing the shroud, women in yellow, blue and grey with arms raised. A veiled mourner stands apart at the lower left. On the right two helmeted guards and a woman in red are seated among dry thorn branches.
