The composition is built on the vertical of the cross, with a ladder set against it. At the top a disciple steadies the beam beside the plaque lettered INRI, while below the body of Christ is received onto a white shroud. Seven figures stand and kneel around it: one reaches upward, one covers her face, another takes the weight of the cloth. The robes are separated by colour — ochre, muted red, blue, olive — and the shroud stays white, gathering the light. A Capodimonte sculptural group with faces and hands worked through in every figure.
