The herd comes down a rocky slope, its figures banked in several tiers. Greys and chestnuts lead with forelegs thrown out at the gallop, a black stallion lifts his head at the centre, and another rears against a shrub at the upper right. On the left a pale horse lies on its side, neck thrown back. The rock is left almost white with sparse greenery, so the colour gathers entirely in the coats and manes of this large group.
