Christopher Columbus

The navigator raises his right hand to his brow against the sun, the left still on the wheel — the moment land comes into view. A red waistcoat sits over the grey shirt, with a sheathed sabre and a leather pouch at the belt. The caravel's sail is down, a planked bulwark runs along the deck, and a rolled chart lies beside the anchor chain. A white bird has settled on the bow while two gulls drop towards the wave at the hull.
